Millom and District is cram packed full of Prehistoric evidence, from the ancient forest off Haverigg Point surveyed by Duddon
Valley History Group, to Mesolithic
footprints on the Duddon foreshore, to flints, stone axes and hammers, to (Neolithic?) crop marks from Millom to Bootle,
to amazing monuments like Swinside Stone Circle, Giant's Grave and Lacra Bank with its burial cairns and stone circles, to
the burial urn found near Beck Farm and the ancient bones found at Haverigg, to the iron age stone head found near St
George's church and the iron turret ring found in a field near the Castle. See our
Prehistoric Millom page for an introduction.
Building on this, with much, much, more research, our chair, Jan Bridget, produced the book Millom
and District: Prehistoric Past. With funding from CGP Books the book was printed and publlished
in February 2023. The first 200 copies went quickly so a further 100 were ordered. We are
awaiting reviews in both the British Association for Local History and Cumberland and
Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society (Cumbria Past) Newsletter.
Copies are available from Greetings and Millom Heritage and Arts Centre as well as Greenlane
Archaeology and Sutton's Bookshop in Ulverston. Price ten pounds.
